Holy Rosary hosted its first-ever “Relay Recess” on Friday, Sept. 25, to benefit the Relay For Life of Warren County. It raised a total of $134.25 through donations and a “dress down” day in which the students and faculty wore purple, the color of Relay For Life.Holy Rosary also held an assembly for its students to talk about the Relay For Life event that was being held the next day, and why they raised money for it and where the money goes.“I tried to promote the event to get the word out,” said Robyn Jablonowski, who works at the school and organized the event. “Holy Rosary receives so much support from the Warren County community we were more than happy to give a little back!”Jablonowski also had help from Sharon Boyer, a parent of one of the students, as well as other staff at Holy Rosary. The students also went outside and did three different activities involving “relays,” in honor of Relay For Life. They did a balloon race where the kids had to work together to get the balloons down and back. Then they linked arms to make a human chain with the challenge of getting hula-hoops through the chain as quickly as possible. The third and last relay was a pizza box challenge. The students had to race down, pick up a box and race back, each time adding to their boxes.“This was hilarious as the kindergartners had stacks higher than themselves,” Jablonowski said. “After all was said and done we put hand prints on a sign and called it a day.”The Relay For Life of Warren County is making plans to get more local schools involved, but in order to avoid the scheduling mishap that happened last year with the city of Warrenton’s Fall Festival, next year’s event has been moved to Saturday, Aug. 27. They have also changed the time to 3-11 p.m. (It was 1-11 p.m. this year.)The location remains the same at Black Hawk Middle School, and event organizers are very appreciative of the school’s support year after year, even with the changing dates. They have also announced their theme for the 2016 event, which will be “Get Your Game On,” and teams have already begun picking games that they will decorate their campsites with, such as Operation, Uno, Pinochle, Candyland, Scrabble and Madden ’16 (the video game), which was chosen by none other than the Warrenton High School football team, of course! As its last fundraiser of 2015, the Relay For Life of Warren County will be hosting a benefit night at 54th Street in Wentzville all day on Wednesday, Dec. 16. With the flier, which can be found on its website (www.relayforlife.org/warrencomo) or Facebook page (www.facebook.com/rflofwarrenco), 15 percent of a purchase will go toward the Relay For Life. They already have fundraisers planned in Wentzville and Warrenton through April 2016, so be on the lookout for those soon. For more information about the 2016 Relay For Life of Warren County, or to get involved, please contact Kanna Rook, American Cancer Society staff partner, at 636-866-4884 or kanna.rook@cancer.org.
