Makenzie Holloway enjoys learning valuable lessons.
As the season is winding down, the Wright City sophomore midfielder is seeing more time on the pitch and she’s putting that time to good use.
She scored a pair of goals to help the Wildcats knock off Hancock 5-0 in the team’s opening round game of the Hazelwood Central Tournament.
“It’s nice to get varsity time because it builds my confidence,” Holloway said. “Going from JV to varsity in my two years helps. We’ve got players like Ada (Ferrell) and Haley (Elsenrath) that I can always watch and learn how to improve my game. Being a part of this team gives me a sense of what the leadership is going to be like next year. It also pushes me to keep improving.”
After watching Elsenrath and Ferrell tally goals in the third and eighth minutes, respectively, Holloway went to work.
She personally doubled the lead with goals in the 27th and 31st minutes.
Wright City Coach Tori Harris said that Holloway has made the most of the time she’s been given. It’s something that could prove valuable, as the Wildcats could play four games this week, with the potential for three more in next week’s district tournament.
“Makenzie has been working so hard with the JV girls, so it’s great to see her step up,” Harris said. “Getting her minutes and boosting her confidence is great to see.”
While Holloway tallied goals two and three, Ferrell’s goal and Elsenrath’s tallies, she scored the first and last goals in the win on Monday, giving them both 24 goals on the season for the Wildcats (14-5).
Her tally in the 33rd made it 5-0.
“It feels really good to keep winning, as a team, like we have,” Elsenrath said. “I liked scoring the first goal. You always want to have the lead of two goals, but you do (have to start somewhere).”
Junior Marli Burkhardt earned the win in goal for Wright City.
Wright City was scheduled to play against McCluer on Tuesday and Hazelwood East on Wednesday in the group stage of the event.
If the Wildcats came out on top of the group, the team would play in the tournament championship game on Friday night.
“We’re trying to get a lot of girls as much time as we can when it comes to game play,” Harris said. “This is potentially a lot of games leading into district play. We’re going to want to have as many girls get as much experience as we can.”
After the tournament ends, Wright City will head to Borgia next week for the Class 2 District 4 tournament. The Wildcats, the event’s third seed, will play Mexico at 7 p.m. on Monday.
The district championship game is slated for May 22 at 5 p.m.
