The Warren County Historical Society’s program on Thursday, June 16, at 7 p.m. will be provided by Frank Nickell. The program is titled “It Is Very Plain: Missourians Are Funny People.” This presentation about the character and nature of Missourians asserts that making a living in Missouri is difficult, that life in the Show-Me State is often harsh, and that the state’s people respond to these realities with a sense of humor. Missourians laugh a lot, often at themselves, and their laughter and humor enable hardworking farmers, miners and woodsmen to accept the backbreaking labor that confronts them on a daily basis. The presentations draws its title from President Harry Truman’s autobiography, “Plain Speaking,” and uses stories from family histories, oral interviews, court records and published histories.Nickell is assistant director of the State Historical Society of Missouri Research Center in Cape Girardeau and emeritus faculty member of the Department of History at Southeast Missouri State University. Also, that evening and during the month of June in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Wright City High School men’s basketball team winning the state championship, the museum will have on display an exhibit organized by Wright City alumni. Besides featuring the original state championship banners, other banners for the men’s basketball and women’s softball teams and original banners representing a variety of other athletic achievements. There are also many items representing the history of Wright City Schools. The event will be at the museum, located at 102 W. Walton in Warrenton. Regular hours are Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, June 12, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
