The city of Washington has agreed to provide street sweeping services for Marthasville, but at a higher cost than earlier recommended.During their meeting this week, city council members agreed to loan a city street sweeper and operator to sweep Marthasville streets twice a year at a cost of $122.34 an hour.Marthasville officials, however, may choose another provider since three companies have submitted bids lower than the city’s price.Earlier this month, City Administrator Jim Briggs recommended a charge of $85 an hour to sweep Marthasville streets twice a year — in spring and fall — but the council balked at that fee, considered by some members as too low, and asked for more information. The $85 fee is the amount that FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) reimburses cities for street sweeping services following a flood or storm disaster, it was explained.Briggs said he thought that the $85 FEMA amount included labor costs. It does not, Briggs told the council this week.“It was my error,” Briggs said.He initially recommended charging $110 an hour. After some discussion, the council agreed on the $122.34 an hour, which would begin when the worker leaves the city with the sweeper and ends when he returns.Other bids the Marthasville board received were:Municipal Sweeping Services, St. Peters, $150 for first hour, then $85 an hour;Metro Sweeping Services, St. Louis, $95 an hour, based on a shop-to-shop time with an eight-hour-a-day minimum; andKatsam LLC, St. Louis, $95 an hour, along with a charge for drive time.Marthasville
