Hibbs named top conference coach

Posted
By Kory CarpenterRecord Sports EditorWhen the spotlight is shown on them for individual achievements, most coaches will deflect praise onto their players.Warrenton’s Trevor Hibbs is no different. The fifth-year head coach guided the Warrenton softball team to the first state championship in school history after winning its third consecutive GAC championship. He improved his Warrenton career record to 101-27, and for his efforts, he won his third straight GAC Coach of the Year award.“It just comes down to having good players, good teams and a good record,” Hibbs said. “We’ve won the conference three years in a row, so it’s on the players.”The Warriors (28-2) posted a 10-0 record in conference, outscoring opponents 134-7.Their closest conference game was an 8-0 victory over Orchard Farm Aug. 27.“It’s nice when you win big, so you don’t have to do a lot as a coach,” Hibbs said. “You just manage the game a little bit.”There is one move, however, that sticks out in Hibbs’ mind.Against Mexico in a postseason game last month, he signaled Jenny Jansen to steal second with Destinee Frost at the plate.“It was a 3-1 count and she hit it right where the shortstop would’ve been,” he said.Overall though, Hibbs continued to point back to his players.“Whatever the players do, we get the awards,” he said. “The more games you win, the more awards you win. We don’t get five all-state players if we’re not state champs. People saw what kind of players they were.”

Warrenton Head Coach Trevor Hibbs was named the GAC Coach of the Year for the third consecutive season after leading the Warriors to an undefeated conference season.
