People who know middle school students who have gone above and beyond to help their community should nominate them for the Positive Practices Award. The deadline is Tuesday, April 30.Helping the community could be as simple as opening a lemonade stand to raise money for a charity, donating birthday money to a good cause, or any act that made or makes a difference in the lives of their peers or community.Any sixth-, seventh- or eighth-grade students from any school, or home school, in Warren County can be nominated. The award is sponsored by Warren County Alcohol and Drug Reduction Support Coalition (W.A.R.S.). The group is made up of individuals and professionals who have an interest in addressing substance use and abuse issues in Warren County through prevention, education and resources.Members include school district staff, local law enforcement, the county health department, Compass Health, local elected officials and community members, and NCADA (National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse), which lends support and guidance. The group believes recognizing the behaviors of youths who are making positive choices is just as important as raising awareness about the dangers of underage drinking and drug abuse, and so the annual Positive Practices Award was created. The award includes a traveling trophy that is housed in a trophy case of the awardee’s school, to emphasize that the recognition for going above and beyond in the community is as valuable as awards for sports, music and academics. For a nomination form, email Denise Richards at richardsdl@warrencor3.k12.mo.us. Completed nomination forms should be returned to Richards or delivered to the Warren County Health Department in the lower level of the Warren County Administration Building, 101 Mockingbird Lane, Warrenton.
