By Tim SchmidtRecord Managing EditorEach year, organizers of the annual Warren County Family Health Fair look to expand upon what has been offered in the past. This year should be no different. The Warren County Health Department will sponsor the annual fair this Saturday, April 5, from 8 a.m.-noon at Wright City High School, located at 520 Westwoods Road. This year’s theme is “Wild About Fitness.”This year’s event will feature a wide variety of exhibitors, health screenings and giveaways. Admission is free.“We are always looking for new educational pieces to bring to our residents,” health department Administrator Ruth Walters said. “We’re working toward a healthier population and lowering the obesity rate.”Another big turnout is expected. An average of 600 to 800 people attend each year as more than 70 exhibitors this year will be showcasing their services, most of whom will be providing free giveaways. For the first time this year, exhibitors will be allowed to sell health-related products. The event is held in conjunction with National Public Health Week, which runs from April 7-13.Some of the free screenings that will be offered Saturday will cover spinal, blood pressure, oral cancer, cholesterol, sleep disorders and back scans.“We want people to know what resources are available in our community,” said Peggy Privett, of the health department. “They will receive plenty of information.”The health fair will kick off with a 5K run/walk beginning at 7:30 a.m. at the Wright City High School track. Registration must be completed by 7:15 a.m. on the day of the event. The fee is $15 and includes a T-shirt.The top three male and female runners in each age division (18 and under, 19-35, 36-50, and 51 and older) will receive awards following the race. One of the event sponsors, Mercy, will be giving away free bicycle helmets to toddlers and preschool children. Other children’s activities will include various contests, face painting, appearance from Ronald McDonald and the Easter Bunny, and providing child identification cards.“We have a lot for the kids,” Privett said. Two raffle drawings will be held at noon. Two children’s bicycles — one male and one female — will be raffled off.A free scavenger hunt also will be held, with a questionnaire to be filled out by participants. The winner of the drawing will receive a basket containing up to $200 in gift certificates and items donated from local businesses.Winners for both drawings need to be present to win, according to organizers. For more information on Saturday’s health fair, contact the health department at 636-456-7474 or visit www.warrencountyhealth.com.Health fair has plenty of activities
