Health department will get $618,000 for COVID response

The Warren County Health Department will receive a total of $618,000 to aid in COVID-19 response, paid for by funding from the federal CARES Act.

The Warren County Commission, in an order issued on the last day of August, said 15 percent of its $4.1 million CARES Act allotment will go to the health department.

That funding can be used for wages, equipment, testing, medical supplies, and when they eventually become available, vaccinations. This includes expenses the health department has already incurred.

Health Department Administrator Ruth Walters said plans are being formed for COVID-related health clinics and eventual vaccinations. The funding will be used for necessary supplies, as well as hiring temporary nurses, clerical staff and contact tracers to support the health department’s COVID response.

“Our increases in numbers continue. (We had) 78 cases in nine days. Our close contacts sometimes are 20 to 30 in each case or more — depends on the case,” Walters reported earlier this week. “Our message is the same: Social distancing, wear a mask in public, wash your hands. Stay home if you are sick! We cannot stress that enough.”
