Hanff, Riggs advance to second day of district wrestling tournament

Warrenton High School freshman Caelyn Hanff and Wright City High School Sophomore Elizabeth Riggs will compete in day two of the Missouri State High School Activities Association District 2 girls wrestling tournament Sunday.

Wrestling in the 149-pound class, Hanff won all three of her matches Saturday to advance to the semifinals. Hanff pinned each of her first two opponents. She pinned Maggie Ortmann of Washington at the 1:37 mark in the first round and Lacey Shoemaker of Cole Camp at the 0:27 mark in the second round. She defeated Skyler Morrisey of Francis Howell Central 16-6 in the quarterfinals to advance to the semifinals. Hanff is slated to face Olivia Chapman of Eldon High School in the semifinals Sunday.

Elizabeth Riggs went 2-1 on the day for the Wright City Wildcats to advance to the second day of competition Sunday. Competing at the 125-pound weight class, Riggs won her first match of the day, pinning opponent Elisia Cintron at the 1:16 mark. She lost her second match to Marissa Sanabria by pin at the 5:25 mark but rebounded to win her first consolation match, pinning opponent Holly Parker at the 2:26 mark. Riggs faces Diana Linscott of Brookfield High School in the next consolation round tomorrow.

Warrenton wrestler Madisen Nash wrestled at 141 for the Warriors and went 1-2 on the day. Krystal Fischer of Versailles pinned Nash in Nash’s first match at the 0:45 mark.  After defeating Ava Bryan of Battle 1-0, she fell in her second consolation match. Emma Henley of Hickman pinned Nash at the 2:38 mark.

Wright City wrestler Hailey Henson went 1-2 on the day. She wrestled at the 115-pound class for Wright City. After losing her first match to Kailey Benson, she rebounded to pin Evie Ryan at the 5:31 mark in her first consolation match. She was pinned by Hannah Wright in her second consolation match.

 Ella Greenwell wrestled in the 235-pound class for the Wildcats and lost both her matches. She was pinned by Keziah Segovia at the 1:05 mark in her opening round match. She lost her first consolation match to Matty Tolbert in a 6-0 decision.

Day two of the District 2 tournament will begin at 12 p.m. Sunday.
