Wright City underclassmen Caelyn Hanff and Kali Jensen each won a pair of matches Thursday to place in the top four at the Missouri Class 1 girls state wrestling tournament.
A sophomore, Hanff rebounded from a semifinal loss to place third in the 170-pound weight class. After dropping a close 6-5 decision to Hailey Romero of Kearney in the semifinals, Hanff beat Madisynn Crawford of Kirksville and Alana Thelin of Pleasant Hill to place third. Hanff beat Crawford on an 8-3 decision and Thelin on an 11-9 decision. Hanff beat Thelin despite trailing 6-2 heading into the final period.
After suffering a loss in the opening round of the tournament Wednesday, Jensen won four consecutive matches Wednesday and Thurday before falling in the third place match in the 115-pound weight class. After earning a pair of wins Wednesday, the Wright City freshman beat Jenna Keller of Brookfield on a 2-1 decision and pinned Louzella Graham of Seneca in 39 seconds to advance to the third place match. Jensen's victory over Graham avenged her opening round loss to Graham on a 6-2 decision. Jensen fell to Annie Moore of Cassville in the third place match.
Wright City senior David Riggs lost to Grant Van Horn of Mexico in the third round wrestlebacks Thursday. Riggs won a pair of matches Wednesday in the 138-pound weight class of the Class 2 boys wrestling tournament.
We will have a full recap of the state wrestling tournament in our March 2 issue.
