Groundbreaking set for Veterans Memorial

Posted
The Tribute to Veterans Memorial Board of Trustees will host the official groundbreaking for the Warren County Veterans Memorial Friday, June 30, at 4:30 p.m. at 431 W. Memorial Parkway in Warrenton. The board and committee for the memorial has been raising money for it for a few years. The city recently donated the land to the group for the project. The site sits next to Denny’s and is visible from Interstate 70 on what is known as the Purple Heart Trail. The groundbreaking ceremony marks the beginning stages of construction for the memorial. To start, the land will be excavated to add electricity, parking, landscaping and ready the spot for placement. The memorial, when it’s complete, will feature a Missouri red granite wall 18 feet long, 6 feet high and 1 foot thick. The names of 71 Warren County veterans who died while serving the country will be etched into the stone.Other aspects of the memorial will include lighting, military flags and a bronze statue of the battlefield cross with the Gold Star mother and child.

A drawing of the site was prepared by Bart Berneking Design of Troy. Names of more than 70 veterans who died in war since World War I will be listed on an 18-foot Missouri red granite wall. The site overlooks Interstate 70, the “Purple Heart Trail.” Submitted rendering.
