Groeper selected as Person of the Year
Posted
For years, Jack Groeper has been an active participant of many Wright City organizations and clubs.Though he has spent countless hours volunteering, he has always been content completing the various tasks in the background. The longtime Wright City resident found himself in the spotlight Friday night.Groeper was selected as the Wright City Area Chamber of Commerce Person of the Year, an award that was presented on the opening night of Strassenbash. He was recognized for his community and civic involvement.“It’s a great community and it’s been fun working and making things better all the time,” said Groeper, who served as grand marshal of Saturday’s parade. “It’s been a fun place to be.”While owning Economy Supermarket, Groeper and his wife, Mary, employed many of the area’s youth and worked around their school and extracurricular activities. He also worked with different organizations and churches in Wright City on supplying their food for their fundraisers. In addition, Groeper bought clothes and provided food for needy families in the area.Over the years, he has helped out at the annual Blue and Gold Scholarship Auction, Chamber events, including serving as chairman of Strassenbash, been a member of the Wright City Lions Club, and served on the Wright City Park Board, including 10 years spent as president. This year’s Strassenbash festival will likely go on without much more of Groeper’s involvement in the future. Now that his family has sold the grocery store earlier this summer, he plans to step down from the committee that plans and organizes the annual park festival.Groeper said he leaves with many fond memories of the festival held each September.“It’s been fun most of the time,” he remarked. “It brings the community together. It’s a good , fun time for the community and to let everyone enjoy themselves.Chamber President Tim Schmidt said Groeper was deserving of the honor."The Person of the Year award is presented to a community member who goes above and beyond the call of duty,” he remarked. “The unsung heroes are volunteers who dedicate countless hours of their time, show strong community spirit and lend support to the community. Jack easily meets all these criteria.”
