Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens announced today that he will resign from office at the end of the week.Greitens made the announcement at 4:30 p.m. today from his office at the capitol. His resignation will be effective June 1 at 5 p.m.The governor said he came to office to fight for the people of Missouri, but legal challenges that have dogged him for months have caused great pain for the people around him, with no end in sight."This ordeal has been designed to cause an incredible amount of strain on my family," Greitens said. "I cannot allow those forces to continue to cause pain and difficulty to the people I love."Greitens denied breaking any laws or committing any offense worthy of the treatment he has received. He was accused of taking a partially nude photo of a woman without her consent during an extramarital affair before his campaign for governor, and inappropriately receiving a donor list from a charity he founded to help in his bid for the governor's office. The Missouri Legislature had been preparing to vote on whether or not to impeach Greitens later this week.Greitens said the fairness of the process that led to his resignation will be judged by history."It has been a great honor and privilege to serve as your governor," he said.He called on his supporters to continue the work of improving the lives of all the citizens of Missouri.
