Gov.-elect Eric Greitens said during his campaign he planned to hire a chief operating officer (COO) to run the day-to-day operations of the governor’s office. His rival, Chris Koster, in a debate when that was mentioned, told Greitens that being COO is the job the governor fulfills.By the way, as the Jefferson City News Tribunepointed out, a COO is not mentioned in the Missouri Constitution or in state laws. Not to worry, the new governor can call him something else, such as a staff member, and all is OK.We wonder if Greitens is going to make himself that visible as governor? After all, he’s got his eyes on a U.S. Senate run and even president of the United States. By not being bothered with the day to day operations of state government, having a COO gives him time to build a foundation for higher office.Since Greitens knows very little about state government, he had better hire a COO who does know. We wouldn’t want a “blind leading the blind” situation.Questions abound: Are we going to have a governor in absentia? Are we going to have a government ivory tower governor? We wish the new governor well, but there are concerns.
