Greene breaks Warrenton shot put record, but has eyes on bigger prize

Even though he’s just a junior, Marcus Greene is already thinking about his legacy.

The Warrenton thrower, who placed 12th at the MSHSAA Class 4 state meet last season, has taken a step further in etching his name into the program’s record book.

Greene, throwing the shot put at the Don Olszowka Relays on April 14 at Union, broke the Warrenton school record with a heave of 53 feet, 10.23 inches. His winning effort bested Rolla’s Tucker Sowers by more than two feet.

The distance bested the school mark of 53-6 meters set by Eric Kessler at the 1996 state track meet.

“It is an amazing feeling to finally achieve something I’ve been wanting to achieve since freshman year,” Greene said. “Once I saw how close I came freshman year and knowing I had three years left (after that) was something I wanted to get before I graduated, and I hope to continue to PR and leave a piece of me behind.”

Warriors coach Mark Thomas said Greene’s reaction was simple and straightforward after breaking the record.

“He scratched his first two attempts but didn’t get flustered,” Thomas said. “After that, he went into the ring and popped the school record. After doing so, he was humble and just gave a thumbs-up. That kind of focus and the ability to not ride the highs and lows emotionally speaks to the high level of competitor he is.”

With the mark in hand, Greene said he’s ready for what the rest of the season holds.

The junior wants not only to return to the state, but he also hopes to focus on improving each time he lets the shot put fly.

His love for the event is something he carries with him each day, Greene said. He added that while his body of work in the discus is coming along, he aims to only strive for the top of the mountain when it comes to the state shot competition.

“I haven’t had the strongest mentality doing disc, but since I’m getting better, I’ve been going in with a winning mentality instead of just doing it because I have to,” said Greene of the disc. “The shot has been my main focus ever since eighth grade, the first time I picked up a shot, I didn’t want to put it down because I fell in love with it, and it’s been the same in high school. I’ve been getting better at disc, but shot-put has always been my strong suit and I’m looking forward to keeping it that way and getting a chance at winning state this year.”
