Governor tours, receives update on CertainTeed project

Record Managing EditorAs Gov. Jay Nixon traveled on Interstate 70 he, like other motorists, has been curious about the ongoing work on the CertainTeed complex.Tuesday brought a closer look at the project.Nixon visited and toured the facility to learn more about the progress being made. This was the governor’s first trip back to the plant since ground was broken in July 2013. Local and state officials were instrumental in securing the planned $100 million complex over other out-of-state competitors.“It was good to hear at the local level everybody is working in concert to make sure this project gets done efficiently, effectively and on time,” Nixon said.CertainTeed officials said the facility is still on schedule to have the manufacturing portion ready for production in 2016. It is located east of Jonesburg, south of Interstate 70 near Scudder Ranch Road on the Warren-Montgomery County line.In June 2014, CertainTeed opened its 150,000-square-foot warehouse, the complex’s first phase. When complete next year, the CertainTeed facility will serve as the production and distribution site for roofing shingles in the Midwest.Nixon was impressed by what he saw as he made multiple stops around the complex visiting with construction workers and CertainTeed employees.“We knew when we were working with this organization they had a world footprint and we were proud they were making Missouri home for the most tech-savvy plant of its type in the world,” he remarked. “It makes you proud to see these kinds of projects like this coming out of the ground and knowing things made here will be shipped all over America and maybe all over the world.”State Rep. Bart Korman, who also toured the complex Monday, was glad to see the progress that is being made.“I think it’s a great development,” he said. “Obviously they have already hired for jobs and more are coming. It’s a great thing for Warren and Montgomery counties.”Besides the immediate impact, the governor acknowledged CertainTeed’s visibility from the interstate as a welcome sight.“Everybody sees it going up and sees the scale of it,” Nixon said. “It’s a good front door for the advanced manufacturing sector, which is one of our targeted industries. This is a really good example how manufacturing is worldwide and manufacturing in the future is a worldwide competition and not just a local one.”
