The first Dave Heiliger Memorial Golf Tournament will be held Sunday, Oct. 8, at the Warrenton Golf Course at 24805 State Highway 47.
The tournament will kick off with a 1 p.m. shotgun start.
The event honors David Heiliger, who was the mayor of Wright City when he died July 6 after having a heart attack. Heiliger was first elected mayor in 2010.
Michelle Heiliger, Dave’s wife, and John Bradshaw, Dave’s friend, organized the memorial tournament, which will benefit the Wright City Community Food Pantry.
Bradshaw knew Heiliger for about 30 years and gave the eulogy at his funeral. He said his friend needs to be remembered.
“Dave knew a lot of people. He touched a lot of people in different ways. He had a big heart,” Bradshaw said.
Filling the food pantry was one of Heiliger’s passions, he said.
“People don’t realize how many kids (eat at school during the week) and go hungry over the weekend. Dave said ‘I don’t want no kids going hungry,’” Bradshaw said.
Heiliger wanted to help people going through hard times, he said, and the pantry gave them a place to go where they could feed their kids.
Bradshaw and Michelle determined that having an annual event in the former mayor’s name to help feed hungry families would be a fitting way to honor him. They chose golf because it was Heiliger’s hobby.
“I got him into golf,” Bradshaw said. “He wasn’t a good golfer, but he loved golf.”
The first Dave Heiliger Memorial Golf Tournament will be 18 holes. The cost is $80 for an individual golfer and $320 per team. Hole sponsorship is $100.
Golfers can purchase mulligans and birdies. Lunch and diner will be provided to golfers.
Bradshaw said non-golfers are welcome to come to the pavilion. Drinks there will be provided and T-shirts honoring Heiliger will be available for purchase. Non-golfers can purchase a steak dinner for $25.
Bradshaw said God intervened for the event. During planning, the date — Oct. 8 — was decided by when the golf course was available for a tournament. Bradshaw found out later that Oct. 8 is the Heiligers’ wedding anniversary.
Bradshaw said his friend’s death taught him not to take life for granted.
“Every day is a blessing,” he said. “Enjoy everyone around you.”
