Nine counties comprising Missouri District 13 have been chosen to receive $31,447 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs.The district covers Lewis, Lincoln, Macon, Marion, Monroe, Pike, Ralls, Shelby and Warren counties.The selection was made by a National Board that is chaired by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Management Agency and consists of representatives from American Red Cross; Catholic Charities, USA; National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA; The Jewish Federations of North America; the Salvation Army; and the United Way Worldwide. The local board was charged to distribute funds appropriated by Congress to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high-need areas around the country.A local board made up of elected local officials, Salvation Army, United Way and others will determine how the funds are to be distributed among the emergency food and shelter programs run by local service agencies in the area. The board is responsible for recommending agencies to receive these funds and any additional funds made available under this phase of the program.Under the terms of the grant from the national board, local agencies chosen to receive funds must be private voluntary nonprofits or units of government; be eligible to receive federal funds; have an accounting system; practice nondiscrimination; and have demonstrated the capability to delivery emergency food and/or shelter programs. Those that are a private voluntary organization must have a voluntary board. Qualifying agencies are urged to apply.Missouri District 13 has distributed Emergency Food and Shelter funds previously with Douglass Community Services, Avenues, Shelby County Food Pantry, NECAC and others. These agencies were responsible for providing meals and nights of lodging.Public or private voluntary agencies interested in applying for Emergency Food and Shelter Program funds must contact Linda Fritz, Board chairperson, 815 N. Business Highway 61, Bowling Green, MO 63334 and or by phone 573-324-2170 for an application.The deadline for applications to be received is Friday, April 10. The District 13 Board will meet on April 14 at 9 a.m., at the NECAC Community Services office, 915 N. Business Highway 61, Bowling Green, to determine agency allocations.NECAC
