Fundraising continues for new billboard

The Wright City Area Chamber of Commerce is close to hitting its fundraising goal to replace the damaged billboard that welcomes motorists into the city. The billboard is located at Westwood and North Service Road and faces westbound Interstate 70 drivers. The canvas broke apart from the billboard frame and is in poor shape.“I’ve been here nine years and (the billboard) predates me. Over time it started to fade and peel down,” said David Buck, Wright City School District superintendent. The billboard is privately owned. The Wright City Area Chamber of Commerce adopted it to maintain and put up a welcome sign years ago.In June, the Chamber held a 5K run to raise money. Next it will host a Texas Hold ’em Saturday, Aug. 26, at Phobius, 420 E. South First St. in Wright City.Buck was the event coordinator for the Chamber’s Pump and Run held June 10 at Snap Fitness. Chamber President Kelly Hill said that event raised about $1,900 toward the estimated $3,000 to replace the billboard.People may sign up for the Texas Hold ’em by emailing info@wrightcityareachamber.org.People who register by Aug. 11 will pay $65. It will be $75 at the door or $30 for spectators. Registration will take place from 5 to 6 p.m. and playing will start at 6:15 p.m.The 21-and-older event will offer prizes. People may bring in their own beverages and enjoy free pizza. Hill said all of the proceeds will go toward the billboard costs. She added that Ziglin Signs in Washington will prepare the vinyl and do the repair work on the billboard. The Chamber will use a design inspired by artwork from a local student. The Chamber held a contest this summer to help determine what the new billboard would look like. Emily Gilley, a Wright City High School student, won the design contest. She earned a $250 cash prize.“She did a great job,” said Hill. “The theme we were running with was ‘Wright City, Missouri, a Great Place to Grow.’ ”Hill said Gilley’s illustration included everything Wright City offers: family, home, farms and businesses. A tweaked, final version of that design is expected to go up within the next two months. Hill said the billboard will be repaired before Strassenbash, Sept. 15-16.“Our goal is to get it up as quickly as possible,” she said.
