Meridian Waste will pick up recycling carts in Warrenton Friday, Dec. 28, on what will be the last day for its recycling pickup service in the city.Curbside recycling service in Warrenton will be discontinued effective Jan. 1.Going forward, residents should put their previously recycled curbside items in their garbage container for curbside collection. Or they can take the items to the city-managed recycling center, Central Missouri Recycling Center, at 24448 South Highway 47.The drop-off area is open to the public Tuesday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon.The center will accept plastic, except for No. 4, No. 6 and black plastics; aluminum, tin and steel cans, corrugated cardboard, glass and mixed paper.Other recyclables such as electronics, tires, computer monitors, batteries and appliances will be accepted, some at a minimal charge. In a study published in 2017 in Science Advances, it was determined only 9 percent of recyclable materials are recycled. The rest is dropped in landfills, public and private property, and much of it ends up in oceans.China had been collecting recyclable materials but recently ended the practice.
