By Patrick MacCoonRecord Sports EditorSix Warrenton Post 122 players were selected along with other elite athletes from the area to play in the Ninth District Freshman All-Star Game in New Haven this Saturday at 1 p.m.Those selected for the postseason honor were Alex Vogt, Mitch Burnette, Braden Lawson, Eli Ecton, Chris Vogt, Kory Schniedermeyer and Kole Hammerburg.“I called them all to inform them of their selections to the team and they were all really excited,” first-year Head Coach Jamey Sherman said. “It’s a great honor for them to represent our program. They all will get an all-star t-shirt and it will be fun for them to hear their names announced.”After the program had one starter in the mid-summer classic last season, three will make starts after impressing coaches around the district this season.Alex Vogt will start at first base after providing the Warrenton lineup with a strong presence at the heart of the lineup. The left-handed slugger hit .361 with two extra base hits, one being a triple in his last at-bat of the district tournament.“Alex was a double-roster member with several of our players,” Sherman said. “His bat at the middle of our lineup was a nice luxury to have. He was very strong defensively at first base as well and can scoop really well.”Burnette led Post 122 in hits (23), average (.451), runs batted in (12) and was named as the right field starter.Lawson will handle the starting catching duties after driving in 11 runs and frustrating opponents from behind the plate. With quick reflexes and a strong arm, Lawson threw out 10 runners this season on the basepaths.“Braden doesn’t let pitches get past him behind the plate,” Sherman said. “He has the ability to shut the other teams running game down.”The three starters will be joined by second-team selections Ecton, Chris Vogt and Schniedermeyer. Hammerburg was selected as a reserve. As one of the top leadoff hitters in the district, Ecton led Warrenton in runs scored (17), doubles (6), slugging percentage (.537) and stolen bases (16).“His ability to get on base is amazing,” he said. “Anytime he reached first base he was pretty much guaranteed to get to second with a stolen base. He rattled opposing pitchers and was a key to getting our offense going. He has a great mix of power and speed.”Chris Vogt and Schniedermeyer both provided strong bats in the lineup and serves as the teams top two aces. In 37 1/3 innings, the two combined for 50 strikeouts and only allowed 15 earned runs.“Kory and Chris were our top two go-to arms on the team,” he said. “They have good velocity and we expect them to throw harder next year since they aren’t finished growing yet. The best is yet to come for both of them on the mound.”Hammerburg added 6 1/3 innings in which he allowed no earned runs and also was a threat on the basepaths with four steals.Sherman was invited to coach in the All-Star Game Saturday. He expects those six selected, including others who narrowly missed being selected, to be a strong building block for the future of the Post 122 program.“These six are a good core to build around,” he said. “It speaks volumes for our program and the future of Post 122. To play in the all-star game is a nice reward for their hard work and play.”
Mitch Burnette was one of six selections from Warrenton Freshman Legion to be make the All Star Game. Burnette led the team with a .451 average and made the first-team along with Alex Vogt and Braden Lawson.
