The Wright City softball team had four players recognized with accolades following an 8-14 season. The Wildcats intensified their schedule this year, playing in new tournaments against larger schools and adding several Class 5 opponents to the schedule.
Ultimately, Wright City concluded its season with a 12-9 setback to Orchard Farm in the first round of the Class 3 District 2 Tournament.
Sophomore Abigail Vossen was named to the Class 3 all-state second team.
Among those recognized on the Eastern Missouri All-Conference team were senior Abigail Raines, junior Tristen Head and Vossen.
Vossen was named first-team all-EMO infielder. She batted .366, with 26 hits and 16 RBI.
“This was her first team receiving any postseason accolades, having really improved over the summer,” said Ross. “She did a really good job for us at third base. Having a good solid corner infielder really helped us a lot this year.”
Raines was chosen as a unanimous first-team outfielder as a result of her consistent reliable defensive effort. She tied for the top batting percentage on the team this season with a .366 average, collecting 26 hits, including eight doubles. She also contributed 19 RBI. Additionally, she recorded a .978 fielding percentage.
“She’s probably one of the best defensive outfielders I’ve seen,” said Coach Fred Ross. “She made eight diving catches to make a play this year. She covered gap to gap, and her hitting got much better. Other coaches saw her ability as well, and it showed in the voting.”
Head was selected as a second-team catcher, providing a wall behind the plate for the Wildcats. She was responsible for 108 outs with a .973 fielding percentage.
“Tristan caught every inning of every game,” said Ross. “That was a ton of pitches with the amount of at bats we gave up. Her hitting numbers weren’t quite as good as last year, which may have kept her from first team again, but she did an outstanding job for us.”
Additionally, Raines and Vossen were both named to the All-District First Team, while junior Hannah Kendall earned a second-team selection as an outfielder. She played multiple positions and was the Wildcats’ lead-off hitter.
“She set the table much of the year,” said Ross. “It was good to see her get recognized for her efforts as well.”
Kendall batted .362 with 25 hits and 16 RBI. As a pitcher, she went 2-4 as a starter with a 6.0 ERA through 30 innings pitched.
“It was a season of streaks, where we were kind of up and down,” said Ross. “We faced our toughest non-conference schedule in a while, so that put a damper on us record wise. We had seven games that were decided by two runs, most of which we lost.”
