The Warrenton Post 122 Junior Legion team had four players chosen to the Ninth District All-Star team following a 4-14 season. One AA player was named to the first team and another pair to the second, while two others earned individual spots to particiapte in the game, which will be held in New Haven at 4 p.m. on July 26.Chris Garrett was chosen for the first team as a second baseman after batting .323 with 10 hits and five RBIs. He scored three runs and was one of the team’s most timely hitters, batting .545 with runners in scoring position.“He’s an all-around great ballplayer,” said Coach Ken Dildine. “What was most impressive about him was he was batting. He predominantly plays infield, but no one could touch his numbers as far as second base goes. He had the vast majority of RBIs on our team.”Austin Dixon was named to the second team as a shortstop after an overall solid showing of leadership. He batted .216 with 11 hits, including a pair of doubles. Dixon was responsible for four RBIs and scoring eight runs.“He’s been the silent leader of our team,” said Dildine. “He kept our guys motivated. He kind of struggled early, but in terms of shortstops, he was better than most of the competition. The last part of the season he really came on strong and was deserving of making it.”Brandon Purkaple secured a spot on the second team after establishing a reputation as one of Post 122’s most reliable infielders. He also pitched and was a threat at the plate, batting .311. Purkaple collected 14 hits, including three doubles. He had nine RBIs and scored four runs.“I really like the way he plays first base,” said Dildine. “He had a good batting average, but I could also aways rely on him to make the plays on defense. He even had our best pitching record (at 3-2).”James Dotson earned a spot on the team as a designated hitter and pitcher. He batted a team-best .353 with 18 hits. Dotson scored eight runs and had three RBIs.“It goes without saying that the kid loves baseball,” said Dildine. “You can really tell he wants to learn and absorb any amount of information you can give him to become a better ballplayer.”Additionally, Ryan Adams will have the opportunity to play an inning in the game after being selected as a pitcher. Dildine says he always felt confident in what Adams would bring to the mound. He tossed 23 innings, carring a 3.9 ERA while giving up 13 earned runs. Adams struck out eight and walked nine.“He didn’t have a lot of wins, but he had a solid ERA for us,” said Dildine. “Whenever we needed a stopper, he kept us in those game. Any time a guy can go in against Washington and frustrate their coach because his kids aren’t hitting, he’s doing a good job.”ALL-STAR SELECTIONSDerrick Forsythe photo.
