A former Wright City R-II superintendent was arrested Friday and accused of murdering a couple in Springfield.

Mark Porter, 53, was lodged in the Greene County Jail on suspicion of two counts of second-degree murder, according to media reports.

The couple, Gary and Jan Tyrrell, were found dead in their Springfield home on May 2. Police refused to release the causes of death or many other details about the murders.

Porter was superintendent in the R-II district from 2005 to 2008. Following his retirement, he has worked for the IBM Corporation and RSP Associates, as well as an adjunct instructor at William Woods University where he taught secondary administration courses, according to his LinkedIn site.

Prior to working in Wright City, Porter was superintendent in Mountain Grove, located about an hour east of Springfield, for two years.

Published reports state Gary Tyrrell, 60, was a longtime teacher in the Mountain Grove School District. He was an assistant superintendent under Porter.
