Record PublisherRueben W. Eichmeyer, former publisher of the Marthasville Record and publisher emeritus of the Warren County Record, died at his home in Marthasville Friday, March 13. He was 82.Eichmeyer began working at The Record in 1950 after he graduated from Marthasville High School. He and his wife, Mabel, leased the Marthasville Record in 1969 and later purchased the newspaper outright in 1975.He served as its publisher and editor until 2001 when he sold the newspaper to The Missourian Publishing Co.“They say newspapers are the first draft of history,” said Record Publisher Bill Miller Jr. “Mr. Eichmeyer faithfully recorded over a half-century of Marthasville’s history. He did so with pride, passion and a genuine love for his community.”Eichmeyer is survived by his wife Mabel and his three daughters, Melissa, Rita and Glenda, all of whom worked at the newspaper at one time or another. In addition to serving as publisher of The Record, Eichmeyer was active in his community. He served one term as mayor of Marthasville in addition to serving on the town’s park board and with the fire and ambulance departments.“He was a good newspaper man. He sweated the little things, like getting the spelling of names right and making sure he hit deadlines,” Miller said.During Eichmeyer’s tenure, the newspaper received acclaim for the retro way it was produced using hot lead and other printing equipment that dated back to the 1920s. The newspaper was featured in several journalism publications. The Missouri River flood of 1993 damaged the paper’s antique press to the point where it was no longer operational. It was at that time the couple contracted with the Missourian Publishing Co. to print The Record. The company, now called The Missourian Media Group, acquired the newspaper from the Eichmeyers in 2001 when they decided to retire.“The newspaper is steeped in tradition,” Miller said. “The Eichmeyers were dedicated to their craft and the community they served. It’s been an honor to carry on that tradition.”The Marthasville Record was first published in December of 1896 by a team of two Marthasville men, J.W. Iserman and T. Robert Howard. At that time the paper was called the Marthasville News. After about six weeks, the partnership was dissolved and Iserman became the sole owner.Iserman published the paper for several years and then sold the business to B.J. Bocklage in 1900 who later formed a partnership with J.F. Wyatt. The newspaper’s name was changed to the Marthasville Record during that period. In 1902, Iserman repurchased The Record and continued publishing the newspaper until he sold it to the partnership of Elroy C. Kehr and Walter Ottermann in 1919. The partnership continued until 1950 when Ottermann died. His widow, Dorothy Ottermann, continued the partnership with her brother Elroy Kehr unitl 1969 when the Eichmeyers leased the paper.
