Abby Schmidt, 18, from Foristell, an 11-year member of the Boone Country 4-H Club, participated in the University of Missouri Extension 4-H Legislative Academy, Feb. 20-22.The academy, presented by FCS Financial, Missouri Pork Association and Terra-Gen, immersed youth delegates in three branches of Missouri state government over three days. Schmidt was one of 15 4-H members, ages 14-20, selected statewide to represent Missouri 4-H in Jefferson City.Schmidt and other delegates learned about the role of justices in First Amendment cases from Tony Simones, judicial educator with the Office of State Courts Administrator. The group also gained perspective on Missouri’s highest court from Missouri Supreme Court Justice Mary Rhodes Russell. While at the Capitol, Schmidt and her fellow delegates learned etiquette and state budget process from MU governmental relations leaders. Sen. Brian Munzlinger and Rep. Tom Hurst, legislative hosts of the 2017 academy, introduced delegates on the floor of the Missouri Senate and House, respectively. Rep. Mike Kelley led delegates on an evening tour of the state Capitol building.Schmidt experienced life as a lawmaker while shadowing Sen. Bob Onder and Rep. Bart Korman on Feb. 21. That evening, delegates dined and spoke before a crowd of legislators, leaders and guests gathered for the MO-AG legislative banquet. The delegates wrapped up by meeting with Missouri Department of Agriculture and Missouri Department of Conservation officials and visiting the offices of Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft, Attorney General Josh Hawley, Lt. Gov. Mike Parson and Gov. Eric Greitens. As a result of the academy, Schmidt and the other delegates said they have a greater appreciation and understanding of how to engage in public processes. They also said they are more likely to be actively involved in their communities and consider careers in public leadership and service.Sponsors of the 4-H Legislative Academy included FCS Financial, Missouri Pork Association, Terra-Gen, Association of Missouri Electric Cooperatives (AMEC), Axiom Strategies, Gamble & Schlemeier, John Bardgett & Associates, Missouri Automobile Dealers, Missouri Cattlemen’s Association, Missouri Corn Merchandising Council, Missouri Trucking Association, Nelda S. Godfrey, Patek & Associates, and Polsinelli.Dinner sponsors included AMEC, Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO) and MO-AG’s Jim Russell Foundation.Missouri 4-H is a community of nearly 230,000 youth ages 5-18 from across the state learning leadership, citizenship and life skills. Members are guided by more than 9,000 caring adult volunteers statewide. 4-H is the youth development program of University of Missouri Extension and the nation’s Cooperative Extension System. For more information, visit 4h.missouri.edu.
