Florist has busy Valentine’s Day

On Valentine’s Day, the busiest place in Warrenton might have been A Moment of Grace Florist and Gifts. The store, located at 511 N. State Highway 47, had customers in and out all day long.“It was just insane. It was order after order,” said floral designer Erin Schroer. On the day after, most of the store had been cleaned up. Just a few things needed some attention after a week of preparing for the holiday.“I’m dead,” Schroer said. The store was at full staff and then some to take orders, create the arrangements, make the deliveries or ring out in-store customers, she said. That was almost 30 people. Most of the orders came in the day before Valentine’s Day, Schroer said. Many more flowers were given to somebody’s sweetheart than not. When the day was over, the refrigerated areas stored the few remaining carnations, roses and lilies.Empty shipping boxes of the sold flowers were stacked high and wide in the basement.“Everything was up 25 percent from the last couple of years,” said owner Cathy Kohenskey. “The staff stayed on top of it, and they did a great job.”The staff said they got through it with a sense of humor and a good attitude. They also are grateful to have such support from the community, Kohenskey said. She added this advice for making fresh flowers last longer:• Refill the vase with fresh, clean water often.• Keep the water level up.• Cut a little off the stems every couple of days.“Plants need water like we need air,” Kohenskey said. The next big day for flowers is Mother’s Day.The florists suggest placing orders one to two weeks in advance.
