We are not aware of any proof to the thought that Americans respect their flag more than most other nations. The Pledge of Allegiance to the flag in America is as common as there are 24 hours in a day.On June 14, 1777, the Second Continental Congress adopted the United States flag. President Woodrow Wilson May 30, 1916, by a proclamation, officially established June 14 as Flag Day. Aug. 3, 1949, President Harry Truman signed an Act of Congress designating June 14 as National Flag Day.Americans display the flag much more than do people in other countries. Visitors from Washington’s Sister City, Marbach am Neckar, Germany, often remark about the many flags they see displayed in this area.“We don’t do that in Germany,” they say. Why? Because the Germans have a great fear of nationalism of a high degree returning to their country. The fear is because of what happened under Nazi Germany, when nationalism was at a high pitch. They don’t want a return to that kind of government.American military personnel attest to the feeling of relief when they see the American flag displayed when they have been away from their combat base, on patrol or some other assignment. The flag gives them a degree of comfort, safety. The high respect for our flag is due to the value Americans place on their freedoms. It also is due to the many Americans who understand the sacrifices that have been made to keep the United States intact as a strong republic — it is a symbol of that fact.
