First of Four Elections Approaches

With the first of this year's four elections approaching, County Clerk Barb Daly is reminding voters in Warrenton and Marthasville that some will be casting ballots in new precincts. Next Tuesday's presidential primary will be the first election since new ward boundaries were drawn in both cities. Daly said voters can confirm what precinct they reside in by reviewing their voter identification card, which also lists the address for the cardholder and polling place. New voter identification cards were mailed to all registered voters in the county earlier this month. The only voters who will notice changes are those affected by the changes in the precinct boundaries. "They need to check their voter ID card and make sure they go to the right polling place," Daly said. "Their wards might have changed with the redistricting." Voter turnout for next Tuesday's presidential primary election is expected to be low, according to Daly, who noted that the results have no impact since the state's presidential party nominees will be decided through a caucus system that starts next month. The presidential candidates on the ballot are as follows: Republican Party - Gary Johnson, Herman Cain, Mitt Romney, Michael J. Meehan, Rick Perry, Keith Drummond, Jon Huntsman, Michele Bachmann, Rick Santorum and Ron Paul; Democratic Party - Barack Obama, Randall Terry, Darcy G. Richardson and John Wolfe; Libertarian Party - James Orland Ogle III. Voters choosing a Republican ballot will not see former House Speaker Newt Gingrich's name listed. His name was not included on the ballot because he failed to submit his application to the Missouri secretary of state's office by the deadline. Other candidates on the ballot have already terminated their campaigns for president. There are no other races or measures on the ballot. Daly is predicting voter turnout to be between 20 to 22 percent countywide. In 2008, the turnout was 36 percent and in 2004 it was 10 percent. All polling places in the county will be open, according to Daly. Polls will be open Tuesday, from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Voters are required to show some sort of identification when they vote, according to Daly. The most popular forms are a driver's license or voter registration card.
