If Warrenton voters pass two propositions in the Aug. 2 election, Rural King will become the first anchor store in the Shoppes at Warrenton revitalization site, formerly the Warrenton Outlet Mall.“We continue to receive strong expressions of interest from a variety of national and regional retailers, most notably from Rural King,” said Art King, president of Raul Walters Properties.King said the two parties have finalized a letter of intent regarding the proposed construction and operation of an 85,000-square-foot Rural King store within the redevelopment area. The site’s successful renovation and leasing is completely dependent on constructing a proposed new Interstate 70 interchange, King said, as retailers require it for better access.“Propositions O and P provide a source to fund this interchange and create a shopping experience that Warrenton does not currently have,” he said. “It also brings jobs and a strong tax base for better schools, parks, roadways and the overall community. This interchange will be the ‘Western Gateway’ into Warrenton.”Recently, Warrenton aldermen unanimously approved an agreement with RAK Development LLC, contingent on the passage of propositions, to help attract retail stores to the new center. The agreement seeks to redevelop and attract businesses to the beleaguered Warrenton Outlet Center. In June, the board unanimously approved an ordinance placing two half-cent sales tax propositions on the Aug. 2 ballot. The first tax would fund construction of the new interchange west of Warrenton, between mile markers 190 and 191.It would expire once the city has paid the debt from construction of the proposed interchange. The second half-cent tax would continue after construction is finished and remain in effect for two years, expiring when the city generates enough revenue from the ensuing economic development to replace the tax. Rural King, with more than 85 locations, opened its first store in Mattoon, Ill., in 1960.The stores feature a product mix of livestock feed, farm equipment, agricultural parts, lawn mowers, work wear, clothing, housewares and toys.Currently, Rural King has stores in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio, Michigan, Missouri, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Florida.
