The Department of Defense recently presented an Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Award to local business owner — Herb Homeyer of Homeyer Precision Manufacturing in Marthasville. The award honors individuals who hire and support members of the National Guard and Reserves as they fulfill their duty to the military while working a full-time job.Employee Sgt. Peter Harman of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve nominated Homeyer for his continuing support during Harman’s service to his country. He is currently employed as the systems and safety manager at the company.Harman, of Marthasville, served five years as an active duty Marine with the 2nd Battalion, 7th Regiment, 1st Marine Division of MCAGCC of Twentynine Palms, Calif., including a deployment to Afghanistan.Since 2013, Harman has served in the 3rd Battalion, 23rd Regiment, 4th Marine Division, stationed in Springfield. Each month, Harman must participate in his unit’s drill weekend. In addition to that, he will spend at least two weeks during the summer months training with his unit.“Employers who receive this award support the reservist with time away from work while maintaining their position at the company,” DOD Representative Karen Levy said. “These companies are really good to their employees, supporting them in many ways.”Levy said support to the Guard or Reserve member includes providing flexible schedules, time off for military training and additional support to the employee’s family during deployment.“We don’t do these awards very often,” said Levy. “We are pleased that Sgt. Harman took the time to recommend Mr. Homeyer for the award.”Harman said there are four veterans of 60 total employees at Homeyer. In his nomination, Harman said “Homeyer does not discriminate in pay, positions, or vacation toward reservists despite a strain placed on the company by training requirements.”He also credits Homeyer with matching reservists and veterans with jobs based on their military experience, even though it is sometimes difficult to find a civilian equivalent position.Levy said Homeyer could be eligible for an additional honor. His name will go on a list to select an individual for the “boss lift” or the “breakfast for bosses.”People chosen for this honor may get to ride along in a military aircraft or get a special tour of Missouri military facilities.Homeyer said that he finds veterans to have a “good work ethic” and fully supports their commitment to our country.Homeyer Precision Manufacturing supports aerospace, defense, military, commercial, medical, electronics, transportation and other various industries. The company was founded in 1990.
