When voters go to the polls next Tuesday, residents throughout western Warren County will be asked to consider tax proposals in the Warrenton and the Jonesburg-High Hill fire protection districts. In southern Warren County, Marthasville city residents will decide whether the term length for mayor should be doubled from two years to four.
Below is a summary of the issues and the language on each ballot.
Warrenton Fire Protection District is once again asking voters to consider a 15-cent property tax increase, as the district continues to struggle with its finances. The district is returning to a property tax request after voters twice rejected a sales tax in 2020.
The cost of the tax increase on a $100,000 home would be $28.50 per year. For a $250,000 home, the cost would be $71.25.
Major objectives for this funding increase include:
• Re-establish facility and vehicle maintenance and other critical expenses that have been cut due to budget shortfalls.
• Double the current volunteer firefighter staff with funds for training and equipment.
• Hire up to three additional career firefighters.
• Rebuild the district’s reserve fund and avoid further sale of property.
Here’s the ballot language:
“Shall the Board of Directors of the Warrenton Fire Protection District be authorized to levy an additional tax of not more than 15 cents on the $100 assessed valuation to provide funds for the support and development of the District?
“The District intends to use the additional tax for the support and development of the district in providing quality emergency services to the community, including, but not limited to, acquisition and maintenance of district equipment, appropriate training, recruitment and retention of staff.”
The city of Marthasville is asking voters to consider doubling the term length for the city’s mayor from two years to four. If approved, the change would go into effect at the 2022 election.
Aldermen say they want the mayor to have a longer guaranteed time to carry out special projects and initiatives after being elected.
This is the ballot language:
“Shall the term of office of Mayor of the City of Marthasville, Missouri, be increased from two years to four year term effective upon their next election to office?”
Jonesburg-High Hill Fire Protection District is asking residents in western Warren County and eastern Montgomery County to consider a 15-cent property tax increase. The additional revenue would be used to begin replacing the district’s fire trucks every five years. The oldest truck is 24 years old, and the newest is 14 years old.
The current estimated cost to replace a truck is $450,000.
Here’s the ballot language:
“Shall the board of directors of the Jonesburg-High Hill Fire Protection District be authorized to levy an additional tax of not more than 15 cents on the $100 assessed valuatoin to provide funds for the support of the district?”
