Candidate filing began Tuesday for state and county offices amid court challenges contesting the new Missouri House and Senate redistricting maps. The five incumbents who filed for county offices on the opening day were Northern District Commissioner Dan Hampson, Southern District Commissioner Hubie Kluesner, Sheriff Kevin Harrison, Assessor Wendy Nordwald and Public Administrator Jeff Hoelscher. All five candidates are Republicans. As of press time, no other candidates had filed for those offices. No candidates had filed for coroner and surveyor. Those positions are currently held by Roger Mauzy and Robert Lewis, respectively. The filing period will conclude Tuesday, March 27. The primary election will be held on Aug. 7, with the general election to follow on Nov. 6. Current Warren County Associate Judge Wes Dalton, a Republican, so far is the lone candidate to file for 12th Judicial Circuit judge. That position is currently held by Keith Sutherland, who will retire at the end of his term. The 12th circuit covers Warren, Montgomery and Audrain counties. State Rep. Bart Korman, a Republican from High Hill, also filed for re-election on Tuesday in the new 42nd District, which encompasses all of Montgomery County and a large portion of Warren County. The district boundary also extends into southwestern St. Charles County to add Augusta and parts of New Melle. He was the lone candidate to file on Tuesday. Currently, Korman represents the 99th District, which includes nearly all of Warren and Montgomery counties, with the exception of small areas around Wellsville and Foristell. Two candidates have surfaced for the House seat in the 63rd District, which includes Wright City and nearly all of Innsbrook and northwestern St. Charles County. The candidates are Wentzville Republican Bryan Spencer and Wright City Democrat Bill Stinson. There was some uncertainty this week as to whether or not the candidate filing period would be pushed back a month after Missouri senators had recently passed a bill to delay the start of filing. But on Monday Cole County Circuit Judge Dan Green denied a last-minute request for a temporary restraining order that would have pushed back the start of filing by 15 days or until a final map is submitted to the secretary of state’s office, according to The Associated Press. Legal challenges also have been made against the new House and congressional districts.
