For Ada Ferrell, the opposing goal must seem as so much less of an obstacle and something more of a welcome mat these days.
That’s because she’s not only buzzing the penalty area of her foes, she’s also finishing at a remarkable rate.
Her goal-scoring tally, which is up to 14 this season, included three more in the Wildcats’ 4-1 win at Warren County rival and host Warrenton on Wednesday.
“This feels really great,” said Ferrell of her offensive success. “My confidence has just been boosted so much throughout the season. My teammates are giving me the confidence to just keep shooting. I’ve never scored this much, so this is very much of a confidence boost. For it to come against a rival, it’s also really special.”
With seven minutes left in the first half, Ferrell tucked a ball inside the left post to put Wright City (7-3) just before the half.
She then added goals in the 55th and 78th minutes as the Wildcats continued to build a lead.
The junior said that the goal in the 55th was particularly important, as it came a minute before a 35-yard free kick from Warrenton sophomore Emory Martinez sailed into the net for the Warriors (0-7), making it 2-1.
“It was very nice,” said Ferrell of the second goal. “Sometimes we get into our heads and that causes us to lose leads and rush everything. That (second goal) allowed us to stay calm and play our game, even (after the Martinez goal).”
While Ferrell didn’t tally the third goal, as it came on a penalty by freshman Haley Elsenrath, she did have a hand in it.
Ferrell was dragged down in the Warrenton penalty area, leading to the kick.
Wright City Coach Tori Harris said she likes what she’s seeing from the Wildcats as the season enters its final weeks, especially from Ferrell.
“We utilize her speed, that’s for sure, and she’s gotten a lot more confidence on the ball,” Harris said. “We’re playing to our strengths. We’re able to play the ball through to her and she’s able to run onto it and finish.”
Junior goalkeeper Marli Burkhardt earned the win in goal for Wright City.
WRIGHT CITY BASEBALL ROMPS IN EMO WIN ON THE ROAD – Playing a tough Eastern Missouri Conference rival on the road didn’t matter much to the Wildcats.
Five first-inning runs and some late-inning offense – with three runs coming in the sixth and five in the seventh – helped the visitors earn the easy 15-3 win at South Callaway.
Leighton McDonald and Brayden Niemann were the hitting stars in the win for Wright City (10-8).
McDonald went 4-for-5 with a double, a home run, five RBI and a pair of runs scored. Niemann, who was the DH, went 2-for-3 with three RBI.
Logan Rose earned the complete-game win, scattering eight hits for Wright City.
Today, Wright City will welcome Hallsville for a 4:30 p.m. first pitch.
WARRENTON BASEBALL BEATS WINFIELD AGAIN – For the second time in as many days, the Warrenton baseball team got the better of Winfield by a 14-3 score.
Playing on the road this time, Warrenton (9-7) led 5-0 headed into the seventh inning before the Warriors lit up the scoreboard with nine runs in the team’s final at-bat.
The Biggest hit of the outburst was a two-run single by Ric Standley.
Warrenton will return home to play Veritas Christian at 4:15 p.m. today.
ACTION HEATS UP ON LINKS, COURT – In addition to both baseball teams seeing action today, golf and volleyball are on the schedule.
At 3:30 p.m., the Warrenton, Wright City and Veritas Christian golf teams will take to the Country Lakes Golf Course for a tri-meet.
Later in the evening, the Warrenton boys’ volleyball team will host Fort Zumwalt South at 5:30 p.m. Warrenton (6-9-1) defeated South (0-15) in four sets on April 7.
