Ada Ferrell’s game –- and legend -– just keep growing.
On Thursday, that growth included a single foot – not a measurement, mind you – the growth came with her left foot.
That’s the appendage the Wright City junior used to knock the ball into the St. Louis Patriots net with just more than two minutes left in the second overtime to earn the Wildcats the 1-0 win over the Patriots.
It also provided the Wildcats with the team’s first win in 11 tries all-time against the Patriots.
“There were so many thoughts going through my head,” said Ferrell of the final play. “It was (on my left foot) and I never shoot with my left foot. I know sometimes you have to step outside your comfort zone to reach the goals that you want. I just took the chance and shot with my left foot and it worked out.”
The Wildcats (10-4) won the team’s eighth game in nine tries, but, perhaps more impressively, the team did so by playing its 198th minute in two days.
The Wildcats got past previously unbeaten Brentwood on Wednesday after a penalty shootout, which was no small feat, Coach Tori Harris said.
“I kept telling the girls that I knew they were tired, but it’s in games like these that we’ve got to push through,” Harris said. “I’m super happy with the effort the girls gave.”
Marli Burkhardt earned the win in goal for the Wildcats as she made 19 saves against the Patriots (7-5).
WARRENTON BOYS TAKE THIRD AT GAC MEET – It was a nice showing by the Warriors at the team’s conference meet at Winfield on Thursday.
Marcus Greene won the shot put with a toss of 51 feet-10 inches to help the boys take third with 107 points.
“It was nice, it was another average day, not near what I want to be at, but enough to get first team all-conference for my first time in my high school career,” Greene said. “I’ve been ranked first the last two years, but got scratched out of the event my freshman year, and being late to the event last year, I ended up getting in my head and placed second. So, it was nice to finally get that first place.”
Other winners for the Warrenton boys included junior Jordan Lopez 42-11.5 in the triple jump and the 4x200-meter team of Johnathan Sweitzer, Ty Thompson, Antevion Pierce, and Antwian Pierce won their conference race in 1 minute, 32.64 seconds.
Warriors’ Coach Mark Thomas said that the team’s preparation for the meet paid off.
“We did very well, as a team, and had several guys have impressive performances,” Thomas said. “At Wednesday’s practice, we talked about seeing how close (to a title) we could get with our number of athletes and had some guys step up and try events they had never done before just to try to earn more points for the team total. This group works hard, is highly competitive, and so fun to coach.”
On the girls’ side, Warrenton placed fourth with 83 points.
Leading the way for the girls was senior Makayla Witthaus. She won the shot put (35-.25) and placed second in the discus (96-6).
ORCHARD FARM OUTSLUGS WARRENTON BASEBALL – For the second time in as many days, Warrenton fell to GAC North foe Orchard Farm, this time at home.
A pair of big innings punctuated the 21-8 win by the Eagles as Orchard Farm tallied seven runs in the third inning and 13 more in the fifth.
Warrenton (10-10) returns to the diamond at 9 a.m. tomorrow to take on Borgia at home.
FORT ZUMWALT NORTH SWEEPS WARRENTON VOLLEYBALL – Warrenton (8-10-1) dropped the 25-23, 25-20, 25-14 decision at home on Thursday.
Senior Teegan Williams led the Warriors with 11 kills, while sophomore Matthew Faubion had 11 assists.
