To say that Matthew Faubion is the glue that binds the Warrenton boys’ volleyball team would not be an overstatement.
Faubion, a junior setter, sat out the Warriors’ three-game loss to North Point on March 31.
He was back in action on Thursday, and his presence acted as a stabilizing force for Warrenton as the team rolled to the 25-12, 25-13, 25-19 win – the team’s first win of the season.
“No one else has experience setting, so it makes it hard for them,” said Faubion of his absence. “When I came back, everybody was in their right spots. We were all where we’re used to playing. Every time I can get a good pass, it gives us a chance to get the point. That’s helpful to have.”
After a quick win in the opening game, Warrenton (1-3) fell behind Holt in game two.
The host squad was up 5-1 as Warrenton didn’t help its own cause, Coach Jake Brown said.
“We had some unforced errors on our serves early,” Brown said. “We were grateful to have Kaleb out there today.’’
Brown was speaking of senior middle hitter Kaleb Lauck, who did plenty of work to help the Warriors out of the team’s early hole.
Lauck recorded three of his team-high six blocks in the second game and, for good measure, he added two of his four kills as the team rebounded to take leads of 9-8 and 11-8 before running away with the game.
“We have a game ball and he gets it for today,” Brown said. “He showed up for us, both on the offensive and defensive ends of the floor. He gave their best players fits trying to work on their timing, getting over his blocks.”
For his part, Lauck said his success in helping the team claw its way back was due to Faubion's presence.
Having his setter put him in a great position to make plays meant the world to him, Lauck said. The setters’ 22 assists paved the way for success, Lauck said.
“Just having Matthew back made a big difference; the team runs off of him,” Lauck said. “It feels great to get our first win. We’re a second-year program and we’re trying to build something. This is (a good start).”
The third game was also something of a back-and-forth affair as Holt led 13-12 before a Lauck block tied it and went up 23-19 before a pair of kills by senior hitter Teegan Williams ended the game.
Williams led the team with 10 kills while sophomore right side Lucas Payne added nine.
Warrenton will look to continue building in its next match when the Warriors head to Fort Zumwalt South (0-6) at 5 p.m. on Tuesday.
