Fatal Fire Under Investigation

By Christopher Waltz Record Editor Investigators with the Missouri State Fire Marshall's office are working to determine the cause of an apartment fire Sunday morning in the 200 block of North West Street which left one person dead, according to Mike Owenby, chief of the Warrenton Fire Protection District. The blaze, which was reported shortly after 5 a.m., started in the kitchen area of unit B-4 of the apartment complex at 205 North West St., Owenby told The Record. The victim lived in the apartment where the fire started. Warren County Coroner Roger Mauzy identified the victim as Roger D. Medsker, 55. Medsker was transported by Warren County ambulance to a St. Charles County area hospital where he was pronounced dead, Mauzy said. The cause of death is under investigation and will be determined pending the results of an autopsy, he added. Residents of two other units, B-2 and B-3, escaped unharmed. The fourth unit, B-1, was not occupied, Owenby said. Officers with the Warrenton Police Department and members of the Warren County Ambulance District — who were returning from another incident — arrived on the scene and began alerting and evacuating residents, according to Owenby. The building sustained extensive damage. For complete details, see this Thursday's edition of The Record.

A building at 205 North West Street, Warrenton, which housed four apartments, a laundry facility and an office was extensively damaged by an early morning fire Sunday. The fire started in unit B-4, spread into the attic area and advanced into units B-3 and B-2. Officials with the Warrenton Fire Protection District said the fire rendered the building uninhabitable.
