Farmers Market Set to Open

The Warren County Farmers Market makes its return this Thursday, May 20, for what organizers hope will be a successful year. The market will be open every Thursday afternoon at Diekroeger Park in Wright City from 3:30-6:30 p.m. "I'm hoping to have a big turnout," market master Irv Huser said. Huser anticipates having 12 to 15 vendors at this Thursday's gathering and said the list should average around 45-50 once more produce is available this summer. The weekly market has been a major hit with area residents, as attendance reached 300 at different times last summer. The market will be open through mid-October. "We will be trying to make things that people enjoy," Huser said. "Hopefully the weather is good. The customers are excited for it to open. "It's so neat to visit and talk with people and share ideas. The customer camaraderie is more important than what we make. Seeing our regulars all the time is fun." From fresh produce and farm fresh eggs to plants and animals, a variety of items will be available for purchase, Huser noted. "People can sit down and visit and do a little shopping," he said. "We don't sell anything that isn't a remarkable product. We want them to experience a community event with local people providing a product for them." Unlike in past years when the Farmers Market had two weekly locations, the organization will only be present weekly in Wright City. Last year, a dispute between the market vendors and the city of Warrenton on rules and regulations led the organization to pull out of there. Eventually, the market relocated to I-70 Auto Body West in Truesdale following a several-week absence. Though the organization had been at the Warren County Fairgrounds for 10 years, Huser said the Wright City location has provided ample room. "The location is visible and it's a park environment," he said. "We're going to focus on doing a good job in Wright City." Huser also noted that sometime in August the Farmers Market will boil sweet corn and provide samples to visitors as a way to show appreciation for their support. The corn will be purchased from local vendors. Anyone interested in becoming a vendor or wanting more information can contact Huser at 636-456-3066. The annual fee to join is $25.
