After testing a Tuesday start date, next year’s Warren County Fair will revert back to a Sunday start in an effort to attract more visitors. The decision was made at the Fair Association’s annual meeting Sept. 11. “2012 is a political year,” said Fair Board President Mike Eckhoff. “We just figured with there being some political issues, that there would be a lot more floats on Sunday. That’s the basic reason for going back to Sunday as the starting day. Some (politicians) would have more time to come from farther away.” The past year’s Fair began on a Tuesday and was shortened to help with the association’s financial shortfalls. A date for this year, however, has not been set. Eckhoff said while this past year’s Fair was successful, the board is looking forward to getting the fair back on track next year. “I think it went relatively well,” he said. “I think we had a really good year, but we’re going to try a new carnival company next year, so we’re still trying to figure out what events we’ll have and what we won’t have. “Right now, we’re talking with (a new) carnival company and we looked at its Web site and rides and it seems like it has better rides than the previous company did,” he added. “I was kind of misled last year on what we’d be getting and some of the public weren’t happy with what we had, so we’re making a change and getting a few more rides and bigger rides in here.” During the meeting, board elections were also held. Trent Edwards was the only new member elected to the board this year. Walt Boismenue, Duke Edwards and Chris Peatross were also re-elected as board members. Peatross will finish the remaining year of former member Christy Bonstell’s term, who resigned from the board. For Fair Board officers, Eckhoff will continue his duties as president, with Bob Wattler and James Edwards serving as vice president and second vice president, respectively. Patrick Simpson will serve as treasurer and Dave Mikus will serve as secretary. Eckhoff admitted that while the Fair Association has a difficult challenge ahead of itself in preparations, he is confident that with the current members, things will go smoothly. “I’m excited about all the new people and the people who have returned,” he said. “We really kind of look to see what they can offer. Everybody gets on the board for a reason and they try to change it and make it a little better. “If they want to express their opinion, they can come out and do that,” Eckhoff added. “We’ll wait and see what changes a new person will bring and see what they can offer.”
