Record Managing EditorThe Warren County Fair parade will be returning to a familiar spot — on Warrenton’s Main Street.City officials and the Fair Board have agreed to change this year’s parade route, with the event scheduled to start on Main Street near the county courthouse and ending in Truesdale. This year’s parade will start at 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 28. The fairgrounds will be open from June 30-July 4.The last time the parade was on Main Street was 2009. Since then, the parade has started on Kuhl Avenue near Black Hawk Middle School and ended at Warrenton High School.Warrenton aldermen, at their last meeting on May 19, unanimously agreed Main Street is the best location for the parade.City streets that will be closed include one lane of Walton behind the courthouse at 2 p.m. and Main Street between 4-6 p.m. A stretch of Highway 47 will also be closed.“I like that better,” Ward 1 Alderman Karen Casserly said. “It is much nicer. I know it’s an obstacle (referring to the Highway 47 closure), but it’s a community event.”Mayor Eric Schleuter said residents for some time had made it known they wanted to see the parade return to Main Street.“I can’t comment on previous mayors or boards, but I know this board has been in support of bringing the parade back,” Schleuter said. “We want to try to give people what they want. I don’t see any safety issues.“I think it’s an excellent idea. The Fair Board has changed, this board has changed. When there was odds before, it wasn’t good. We need to start working together.”Fair Board President Paul Owenby agreed the relationship has improved, noting that the city is sponsoring live music and the fireworks show at this year’s Fair. He added it was the city that initiated changing the route.“I thought it was a great idea,” he said. “It’s a good deal.”Owenby said the Fair Board is working to finalize this year’s schedule. The queen pageant will be the main entertainment on the opening night June 30. Other nightly featured attractions include the garden tractor pull and BMX races on July 1, the livestock auction and tractor pull on July 2, live music on July 3, and the rodeo, demolition derby and fireworks show on July 4.This year’s Fair theme is “Country Flare at the Warren County Fair.”2014 Warren County Fair Parade
