Fair More 'Fan Friendly' in 2009

Wanting to cater to the public attending this year's weeklong event, a few changes have been made to make the annual event more fan and cost friendly. The theme, "Your Fair, Your Way," is about following recommendations made from previous years, Fair Board President Roger Owenby explained. "I want everyone to have fun, be safe and leave after having a good time," he remarked. "We want everyone to come here and have fun and get it back to the old time Fair." This year's Fair begins Sunday, June 28, and concludes Saturday, July 4, at the fairgrounds located on North Highway 47 in Warrenton. The fairgrounds will be closed to the public Monday, June 29. Organizers have scheduled a variety of events for all age groups including carnival rides, kids activities and nightly entertainment. "We have tried to keep cost down so more people will come out and enjoy the Fair," said Christy Bonstell, Fair Board member. "We want everyone to come out and support the Fair and have a good time. It's a good place for the whole community to come together." In an effort to keep costs down, the Fair has instituted a one-price admission, eliminating the need for wristbands to be purchased for carnival rides. The daily admission price ranges from $12 to $18 for adults (13 and over) and $8 to $12 for children (ages 4-12). Season passes are available for $35. As in the past, there is no admission fee to the Fair on the opening day, June 28. "We don't want it to cost a fortune," Owenby added. Admission tickets can be purchased at a booth located next to the entrance to the fairgrounds which is also new this year. Owenby said the change was made to keep track of how many people attend the Fair each night. A minor change is being made in the beer garden. Drink tickets are good for the entire week rather than having different colored tickets for each day. Another new feature, a courtesy vehicle will be available for fairgoers who have difficulty walking on the grounds or from the parking lot area. "It's something to make it easier for people to come out to the Fair," Owenby said. "We want them to get back to their car safely." The headline entertainment this year is the Kentucky Headhunters, known for their hybrid of honky tonk, blues and southern rock. The group will take to the main stage at approximately 9 p.m. on Friday, July 3. The band, best known for its hits "Dumas Walker and "Oh, Lonesome Me," claimed awards from the Academy of Country Music for top new group in 1989 and a Grammy for best country performance by a group in 1990. "They put on a really good entertaining show," Bonstell said. Opening for the Kentucky Headhunters is Butch Wax and The Hollywoods, a popular St. Louis area band that began its career 25 year ago playing in the beer garden at the Warren County Fair. Since then, the group has opened for such as acts as Chuck Berry, Johnnie Johnson, and even the Kentucky Headhunters. Butch Wax and The Hollywoods will take the stage at 7:30 p.m. "They have always wanted to play on the main stage," Owenby said. "I can guarantee they will put on one hell of a show. You got to get the people excited and they will do that." The Fair kicks off Sunday with the parade at 4 p.m. on Main Street in Warrenton followed by the queen coronation at 7 p.m. Sunday is the only day where fairgoers must purchases tickets for the carnival rides. The other featured nightly entertainment includes motocross on Tuesday, mini rod, super smoker and garden tractor pull on Wednesday, demolition derby on Thursday, rodeo , and a truck and tractor pull on Satuday. Live music will be in the beer garden every night. A karaoke contest also will be held Tuesday beginning at 6 p.m. A wild cow milking contest will be held Wednesday at 6 p.m., while bingo will be held from 1-5 p.m. in the Lions Club on Thursday. The livestock buyer's dinner and auction will also be held Thursday beginning at 5:30 p.m. Part of Saturday's activities includes a baby show at 10 a.m., frog and turtle races at noon and a washer tournament beginning at 1 p.m. ðA fireworks show will be held at dusk.
