Fair Benefiting from Changes

The Fair began Sunday and concludes this Saturday, July 4. Roger Owenby, Fair Board president, said attendance has been strong through the first two days of the event and that visitors have been receptive to the one-price admission fee which has eliminated the need for wristbands to be purchased for carnival rides. "I think we had a fair crowd (Tuesday night)," Owenby said. "We got a lot of bikes here. Sunday was a nice turnout." The daily admission fee ranges from $12 to $18 for adults (13 and over) and $8 to $12 for children (ages 4-12). "The new gate is working out," Owenby said. "The crowds have been a good indication. The parade was wonderful. I hope the community enjoys it." Owenby said Tuesday night the only hitch so far has been a later starting time for carnival rides on Sunday. He said the problem centered on travel issues related to Saturday night's thunderstorm. Sunday's parade kicked off this year's weeklong event. Although the 83 entries were fewer than in past years, Owenby said he was excited to see a big crowd line Main Street. He said fairgoers took advantage of the free admission for the queen coronation. The Fair resumed Tuesday and drew a strong crowd for motocross competition. Owenby said he and the Fair Board were confident that the other featured events would also attract large crowds. On Thursday, the demolition derby will begin at 7 p.m. Before that, the livestock buyers' dinner will be held at 5:30 p.m. followed by an auction at 7 p.m. The headline music entertainment, the Kentucky Headhunters, known for hits such as "Dumas Walker" and "Oh, Lonesome Me," will take the stage Friday evening at approximately 9 p.m. "They will rock," Owenby predicted. Butch Wax and The Hollywoods, who began their career 25 years ago in the beer garden at the Warren County Fair, will be the opening act at 7:30 p.m. Also, a rodeo featuring bull riding and barrel racing will be held at 8 p.m. on both Thursday and Friday evenings. Saturday's activities include a baby contest at 10 a.m., frog and turtle races and barbecue contest at noon, washer tournament and watermelon eating contest at 1 p.m., and the greased pig contest at 7 p.m. The truck and tractor pull will also be held Saturday at 7 p.m. A choreographed fireworks show will be held around dusk, Owenby said. "It will be a really nice show," he noted. Thursday has been designated as Senior Citizens Day for those 55 and over and Saturday is Military Appreciation Day.
