President Donald Trump appears to have made an excellent choice as his nominee for the U.S. Supreme Court in Neil Gorsuch. But as expected, the Democrats will do everything they can do to block confirmation. For some of the Democrats to view the appointment as the court’s “stolen seat,” is unbecoming of elected lawmakers. Do the Democrats own that position on the court? The Republicans certainly don’t.Yes, Gorsuch is a conservative who has excellent experience. He also is young, 49, and his education is about as good as it gets for a Supreme Court justice. Regardless of his strong credentials, Democrats don’t like him because he is a conservative.Democrats should be reminded that Trump was elected president because of his conservative leanings on most issues. The voters knew in voting for Trump that he would nominate a conservative. Democrats will respond to that by saying Trump didn’t win the majority of voters, but he did win the Electoral College vote by a healthy margin. In Missouri, Trump won by a large margin in the popular vote. Yet one of our senators, Claire McCaskill, a Democrat, is supporting her party colleagues in opposing the appointment unless he meets a 60-vote threshold. Republicans hold 52 seats. To reach 60 votes, some Democrats would have to vote for confirmation.Sen. McCaskill is supposed to represent Missourians first, and her party should not come first. We suggest she look over the Missouri votes for president to learn how Missourians feel about issues. They knew when they voted overwhelmingly for Trump they were voting for a conservative justice appointment.Sen. McCaskill, we have admired your fighting spirit on many issues and your constant demand for accountability from federal officials and agencies. You have fought for Missouri issues. The appointment of Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court is favored by Missouri voters based on their vote for Trump. The vote for Trump statewide was 56.7 percent.Sen. McCaskill, we ask you to consider the outcome of the general election and support to confirm the Trump nominee.
