Evans leads Wright City softball in postseason awards

Wright City senior Macy Evans led the Wildcat softball team with a second-team all-region selection after hitting .429 with 24 RBIs this season.

Evans also was a first-team All-Eastern Missouri Conference selection.

“Macy was probably our second-best hitter this year,” Wright City Head Coach Fred Ross said. “She was solid defensively and pitched when we needed her to pitch. Her height and her length really saved us in the infield.”

Evans was joined on the all-conference first team by Maddie Webb, Abbie Jaspering and Leah Vossen.

Webb pitched a team-high 78 innings, posting a 3.23 earned-run average and 63 strikeouts.

At the plate, she hit .363 with 14 RBIs.

“Maddie was probably our No. 1 pitcher, and she hit the ball well in the second half, too,” Ross said. “Her pitching kept her competitive in a lot of games this year.”

Abbie Jaspering led Wright City with 29 RBIs while collecting 30 hits and two home runs.

“She was one of our best players and started hitting the ball in the second half, as well,” Ross said. “We expected her to have a big year, and she will continue to improve next year.”

Leah Vossen led the team in batting average (.470), home runs (4), slugging percentage (.955) and doubles (20).

“Leah rebounded from a sophomore slump this year and got back to her old form,” Ross said. “She really sprayed the ball all over the field and showed her power. She broke the school record in doubles and was in the top 10 in the area in slugging percentage. She’s one of the players that hit all year long.”

Riley Heiliger earned a second-team all-conference nod after hitting .426 with a team-high four triples.

“She switched back over to the right side and she seemed to have more pop with the bat and seemed to see the ball better,” Ross said. “The second half of the season she really hit the ball well, and she was great for a first-year varsity player. She could run, too, and got bigger and stronger this year.”
