A year after making her debut at the Class 3 state track meet, Wright City’s Erin Tomschin returns in the 3,200-meter Friday afternoon.
Tomschin finished third at Saturday’s Class 3, Sectional 2 meet at Montgomery County in 12 minutes, 28.35 seconds to qualify.
“That was only the third time she had run that this year, so she’ll get some more distance in this week and we expect her time to go down a little bit,” Wright City Head Coach Fred Ross said.
The senior advanced to the sectional in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200, but skipped the 1,600 to focus on the other two races.
She finished fifth in the 800 in 2:32.31.
“The mile was so tough in our sectional that we decided not to run her in that to save some energy,” Ross added. “She didn’t quite have the kick in the 800, but she ran her best time in the 2-mile. And it was good to see her do that.”
The personal best in the 3,200 puts Tomschin in 13th heading into Saturday’s race.
Fatima’s Brianna Haller holds the best time in the class at 11:31.13.
Last season Tomschin finished 15th in the event in 12:53.67.
“She has that experience of being there last year, so that will help her. You worry a little about the kids who haven’t been to state before, but Erin being there is really going to help,” Ross said. “I think it’s easier in distance and individual events because it’s just you. It’s Erin against the two miles. There usually isn’t anyone cutting you off or anything because things get spread out over two miles.”
