The Scenic Regional Library is offering English language classes to people who want to improve their English. The classes also give others the opportunity to teach.The Wright City English Language Acquisition (ELA) program currently has two instructors in the evening and eight students enrolled.The classes are held at the Church of the Nazarene, 521 N. Service Road in Wright City, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5-8 p.m.The next orientation session for new students is scheduled for March 7.The classes are free for those individuals seeking to learn or improve their English language skills.The program is seeking additional volunteers who each can contribute one or more hours per week to help students learn English. They will be trained in partnership with the East Central Area Literacy Council. The program is also seeking two or three additional instructors for day classes which will be added on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to noon.In November 2017, ELA classes were launched in Wright City through a partnership between East Central College, the Church of Nazarene, Scenic Regional Library and the East Central Area Literacy Council.The Church of Nazarene donates the classroom space, internet access and other utilities.Scenic Regional Library purchased all the textbooks, workbooks and testing materials for the program. The cost to open a classroom is approximately $10,000 for furniture, technology and curriculum. The library’s contribution was $4,900.In 2015, Scenic Regional Library also purchased and donated the learning materials for the ELA classes offered in Washington.
