Sutherland, a native of Warrenton, posted a two-to-one vote margin over Democratic challenger Patrick Lewis of High Hill. Final, unofficial election returns showed Sutherland with 13,375 votes compared to Lewis' 6,485 votes. "I'm pleased to have been elected again," said Sutherland. "I'm looking forward to going back to work in the Legislature for the people of the 99th District." Lewis failed to carry a single precinct in Warren County. The closest races were in Wright City's Ward 1, where Sutherland won by a 295-273 margin, and in the city of Truesdale which Sutherland carried by a 95-79 margin. Sutherland said his experience of six years in the Legislature was likely an important factor in the easy victory. "I hope it says the people of the 99th District are pleased with what I've done," he observed. "I appreciate the vote of confidence from the people." Sutherland noted the 2008 general election was a "tough Republican year overall" and said that fact alone made his victory Tuesday special. "Even in Warren County, typically a very strong Republican county, there were some closer races than usual," Sutherland said. Sutherland said he was pleased the Republican Party held its control in the Missouri Legislature but noted working with a new Democratic governor in Jay Nixon, who defeated Republican challenger Kenny Hulshof Tuesday, could be a challenging experience. "Things in the Legislature will be different, that's for sure," said Sutherland. "I expect the governor will challenge the Legislature and I suspect we will challenge him at times." Lewis, a political newcomer, thanked everyone who voted for him. But it might not be the last time Lewis' name appears on a ballot. "I think I might run again (for the 99th District seat) in 2010," said Lewis Wednesday morning. "It was a good experience for me this time, I learned a lot and I wouldn't be running against Mike Sutherland next time either. "I understand the way the people voted," Lewis added. "I like Mike and I think he's done a pretty decent job. I even called him this morning to leave a message on his phone and congratulate him on his win."
