Record Managing EditorAs a teacher, insurance agent or mayor, Jerry Dyer will be remembered for the many people he helped. No matter the title he held, he had a genuine respect for everyone he came across.Dyer passed away Saturday, Jan. 24, following his third battle with cancer. He was 68.Hundreds of people, including family, friends, former students and clients, attended Tuesday’s visitation. A memorial service was held Wednesday.“The community has lot a wonderful person; not a mayor or politician, a wonderful person,” Southern District Commissioner Hubie Kluesner said.Dyer taught in the Warren County R-III School District for 13 years. During that time, he coached football, basketball and track at the junior high and high school levels. He then accepted a job as principal at Wright City High School.Dyer also spent over 30 years as an agent for Shelter Insurance in Warrenton. Most recently, Dyer served as mayor of Warrenton from April 2012 to October 2014. He resigned last year for health reasons.“Jerry’s personality and management style allowed him to easily earn the respect of both the city employees and board members,” Warrenton Ward 2 Alderman Gary Auch said. “In addition, his leadership style promoted structured decision making and opportunities to express opinions and perspectives.”During his time leading the city, Dyer worked to improve relationships with officials from other local governments. Kluesner recalled the time when the county held an open house for the new administration building and Dyer offered an olive branch as a sign of renewed cooperation between the two governments. The county and city had been in a legal spat over the permit process for the building project.“That sums up his nature,” Kluesner said about Dyer, who had been mayor for only two months. “He wanted to bring unity to the community.”Truesdale Mayor Murray Bruer said he welcomed the time Dyer spent as Warrenton mayor. He said they would meet every so often to talk about issues facing their cities and offer solutions that could help one another.“I felt like he was very intelligent and intuitive as far as what was needed for the city,” Bruer said. “He definitely had a plan in mind. He was the type of person you enjoyed being around. He was a great guy.”Dyer is survived by his wife, Cheryl; two children, Stephen Dyer and Erin Kaminski; and six grandchildren.
