Record Managing Editor An innovative program designed to use music as a way to improve interaction and development in children is coming to Warrenton. An introduction to Education Through Music workshop will be held Tuesday, July 22, and Wednesday, July 23, at Rebecca Boone Elementary School in Warrenton. The two-day workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cost to attend is $145 and includes lunch both days. For an additional $60, attendees can earn one graduate credit from Lindenwood University. Education Through Music, also known as ETM, is a language-based program in which song, movement and interactive play promote emotional, social, cognitive and musical development. The program, being held in cooperation with the Warren County R-III School District, is being coordinated by Sharon Dieckmann, a retired R-III teacher, and her daughter, Karinsa Moline, who teaches elementary music in Champaign, Ill. Attendees will learn a “toolbox of activities” to teach children on how to be more focused and attentive, and accelerate language development among other benefits. “It’s active lectures about brain research,” Moline said. “We will sit and study how the brain works. It is all interactive.” Dieckmann added: “It’s a fun two days. You won’t feel drained, you will leave energized.” The workshop is open to anyone who deals with children, such as parents, childcare providers, teachers, doctors, social workers, speech-language pathologists and occupational therapists. In attendance at the workshop will be Randy McChesney, executive director of Richards Institute of Education Through Music. McChesney travels across the country promoting the program, but it has yet to catch on in Missouri. For more information about the ETM workshop or to register to attend, contact Dieckmann at dieckmannsharon@gmail.com or 636-297-5097, Moline at bkmoline@gmail.com or 217-417-1891, or R-III Assistant Superintendent Dr. Gregg Klinginsmith at klinginsmithgt@warrencor3.k12.mo.us or 636-456-6901.
