Organizers of an upcoming opioid awareness event at Warrenton High School hope they can help make a positive change for people and families struggling with addiction. The event on Saturday, June 22, will feature guest speakers from the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse and the Warrenton Police Department, who will discuss how to spot early warning signs of drug abuse and how to talk to family members about it. The event is from 2-4 p.m.Organizer Stacey White with the Warren County Health Department said the event is open to anyone in the community, because opioids affect the entire community.“We encourage all ages to be there. Opioids impact everyone,” White said.Other community health organizations, addiction recovery groups and social support organizations will be present to distribute information about the services they offer for people struggling with addiction, White added. Community groups that want to participate can join the event by calling White at the Warren County Health Department, 636-456-7474.One of the more unusual displays at the event will be a mock setup of a bedroom, with drug paraphernalia hidden in plain sight. Warrenton Police Lt. Branden Weber will explain how certain items can be disguised to hide the early warning signs of drug use.Door prizes will provide positive encouragement for people to attend the opioid awareness event. Prizes include pool and movie passes, trips to Big Joel’s Safari, and other items.Opioid awareness
